As I type - the Windows Development Team has released the final bits of the Windows 64bit OS (Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Windows Server 2003 x64 Editions - Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter) to Manufacturing. Today marks a day in computing history as we witness the dawn of the 64 bit computing era. Computing will never be the same.

Let me just say... I am NOT a hardware guru!  However, his post got me thinking... I have an Athlon64 cpu.

Does that mean I should run Win XP Pro x64 Edition?  Will I see a performance difference?  What differences will I see?

Any advice would be appreciated.

64-bit OS enables access to more memory and it is also a bit more optimized and faster when working with memory.
64-bit OS also doubles the number of available general registers (extremely fast memory integrated on processor). and all those registers become 64-bit (only 32-bit before). This means the CPU can get quicker to memory and it can compute with larger numbers in shorter time.
So far I have very positive experience with Windows XP x64 RC2 and also 64-bit Linux. Some apps are quite a lot faster. For example encoders (video and audio), math apps like Mathematica, compression utilities, encryption tools. Compilations is also quite a bit faster. And I guess it will get even better when apps get even more optimized and drivers too.
